She has come up with 10 fun and clever tasks that involve books, reading, and even a little writing. This is my blog entry for Challenge #5.

Here are the instructions for this particular challenge:

5.Phoning An Author
Pick a random last name out of the phone book. Find an author with the same last name and read a book by them. Write about it. (I'm flexible ... if the first random name you pick is Xprxyrsss, you can pick again!)

I closed my eyes, flipped open the phone book, and pointed my finger. The random last name I landed on was Ray. Then, at the library, I went to the fiction section to see what I could find. What I found was this:

Julie and Romeo by Jeanne Ray
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 103px; height: 160px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HbInqT6lN4Q/SvQ9m9HtjwI/AAAAAAAABXk/V33vZnsvz7I/s320/julieandromeo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401009592575299330" />

Julie Roseman is Jewish, 60 years old, with two grown daughters - Sandy, who has moved back home with her two kids after getting divorced, and Nora, the outspoken, gorgeous, married real estate agent. Julie herself is divorced, her husband having left her for a younger woman. Julie runs a florist that has been in her family for years, and right now, business is not going very well.

Romeo Cacciamani is Italian, catholic, 60 years old, with five grown children. He is a widow and lives in a duplex with his 90 year old mother, two of his children, a daughter-in-law, and three of his grandchildren. Romeo also runs his family-owned florist.

The Rosemans and The Cacciamanis; very different families who happen to own the only two florists in town. They also happen to be mortal enemies. As a little girl, Julie can remember her father spitting on the ground every time he heard the name "Cacciamani." These families hate each other. Come to think of it, though, Julie doesn't really know why they hate each other. No one ever explained it to her. It was just a known fact that the Rosemans hated the Cacciamanis and vice verse.

When Julie and Romeo both happen to attend a small business seminar on how to improve their shops, they run into each other face to face for the first time in many years. They make small talk and soon realize that there is no hatred between them. Instead, they are drawn together by an intense attraction and bond. Soon, they are sneaking around town going on dates. Julie, whose marriage was never that great, thought it was too late to find true, passionate love. Romeo, who adored his late wife, never thought he would find love again. They know that this thing between them is something special and they intend to pursue it (even if they must do so secretly).

Before long, their secret relationship is discovered by their families and all hell breaks loose. Nora calls her dad and flies him home with his young new wife to try and talk some sense into Julie. One of Romeo's sons comes to visit Julie and warns her to stay away from his father. And, Romeo's 90 year old mother sneaks over to Julie's garden in the middle of the night to salt her roses. The antics that go on to try and keep Julie and Romeo apart are crazy. Will they be able to withstand the trouble or should they give up their love to appease their families?

I immediately liked the characters of Julie and Romeo and rooted for them all the way. This was a light, sweet, and funny story with a happy ending.

Aloha Friday - Chili

It's Friday - time to take it easy and get ready for the weekend. I will post something quick and easy for you to respond to...

Today, let's talk chili. Now that the crisp cool autumn days are here, it's the perfect time to enjoy some chili. I was talking with my daughter's piano teacher about this and was surprised to learn that she had never had chili with spaghetti noodles - she never even heard of anyone putting spaghetti noodles in their chili. What? That's the only way we've ever made it, but, maybe it's not as common as I think.

I like my bowl of chili (made with spaghetti noodles) with a couple of crushed-up saltine crackers and some shredded cheddar cheese on top. And, I like mine to be pretty mild; I don't do spicy. My husband adds jalapeno slices to his bowl.

What about you? How do you make chili - with or without spaghetti?
Do you add in any other toppings?

If you would like to participate in Aloha Friday, visit An Island Life.

Take A Chance Challenge - Challenge #7

I'm so excited to be participating in the Take A Chance Challenge hosted by Jenners over at Find Your Next Book Here. This is my blog entry for Challenge #7.

Here are the instructions for this particular challenge:

Challenge 7: Random Bestseller
Go to Random.org and, using the True Random Number Generator, enter the number 1950 for the min. and 2008 for the max. and then hit generate. Then go to this site and find the year that Random.org generated for you and click on it. Then find the bestseller list for the week that would contain your birthday for that year. Choose one of the bestsellers from the list that comes up, read it and write about it.

My random year was 1998. The book I chose was Summer Sisters by Judy Blume. It was on the bestseller list for the week of August 23rd, 1998.

As a child, I read and loved many of Judy Blume's books. But, I wasn't really familiar with any of her adult works, so, I was anxious to check this one out.

It's 1990. Victoria, or Vix as she's known to her family and friends, gets a call at work. It's her longtime childhood friend, Caitlin. She tells Vix that she has to come and be her maid of honor; she's getting married! After agreeing to come and be Caitlin's maid of honor, Vix hangs up the phone. She goes to the office restroom and gets sick. Why did she agree to this?

Then, it flashes back to 1977. Caitlin is the new girl at Acequia Madre Elementary school in Santa Fe. She's beautiful, outspoken, and fearless. All the kids love her. Vix, is quiet, shy, and in awe of Caitlin. When Caitlin approaches Vix out of the blue and invites her to spend the summer with her family at the beach, Vix is thrilled. Over the next eight years, Vix continues to spend all her summers with Caitlin. Although they come from very different backgrounds - Caitlin's family has money, Vix's family doesn't - they become best friends. They become "summer sisters."

This coming of age story follows Vix and Caitlin as they grow up and experience many firsts - first crushes, first jobs, first loves, "first times".... Their relationship is far from perfect, but, they share a special bond that can't seem to be broken. Caitlin is wild and reckless, a wanderlust. Vix, more stable, focused on going to college and making something of herself. Their lives take different paths, but they always seem to find their way back together.

I loved this book! From page one, I didn't want to put it down. I have to admit, I did not like Caitlin and couldn't identify with her at all. But, the dynamics between the two girls really drew me in. And, there were so many interesting characters that really added to the story. I was very satisfied with the ending.

Movie Trivia and 400 Posts - GIVEAWAY WINNER

Thanks to everyone who played along in my movie trivia contest. It's one of our go-to family favorites that we usually have at least once per month. The recipe is very easy, but, one of those that I don't have exact ingredient amounts for (I tend to adjust amounts and just throw them in until I feel like it's right). After you make it a few times, you can decide if you like it thicker or thinner, spicier, less cheese, etc. This is the basic recipe I use to feed my family of 6 (and we always have tons leftover):

Mexican Chicken

-4 to 5 Boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cooked and cut into small pieces (you can use more or less chicken depending on your preference or amount you wish to make)

-Minute Instant White Rice, prepared as directed (I prepare the "6 servings" amount)

-2 Cans Cream of Chicken Soup

-2 Cans Cream of Celery Soup

-1 Can Petite Diced Tomatoes

-1 Jar Salsa (any brand you prefer, I use about 3/4 of the 16 oz. size jar)

-Velveeta Cheese

-Sour cream and/or jalapeno slices, optional

Combine prepared chicken and prepared rice in a large bowl.

Next, add the soups and can of tomatoes to the chicken/rice mixture

Add salsa

Mix well. My friend sent me a picture mail and text the other night showing her broom standing in the middle of her kitchen floor. She was amazed and said I needed to try it myself. We got our broom and took it into our foyer. At first, it just fell over when we tried to stand it. But, after several attempts, my son got it to stand on its own. This is the actual picture of our broom - standing completely on its own.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HbInqT6lN4Q/SuyEvXIO0yI/AAAAAAAABVs/epvshs1J1KE/s320/broom.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398836002507641634" />

I tried to google it and figure out how this works. Some say it has something to do with the way the planets are aligned at a given time. Others said it was related to barometric pressure. I really have no idea how it works, but, we thought it was pretty cool. The broom stood all by itself for about 30 minutes, then it just fell (scaring us half to pieces). Have you ever heard of this? Ever tried it? If you do, let me know if it works for you, too.

Happy Halloween! As you can see, it's very unorganized - overflowing with pages and pages of recipes that I have printed on the computer or pulled out of magazines. Every time I get it out to look for a recipe, it stresses me out...papers fall out or I can't find what I'm looking for. I really want to work on this and get it in order. I'm having trouble deciding how I want to organize everything. I don't like recipe cards, they seem too small and condensed. I do prefer the idea of a recipe box over a recipe book. And, I want to keep the photos that are on the recipes I've printed or pulled out of magazines. So, any suggestions? It all started in 2004 at Thanksgiving; four yr. old Hannah Turner helped her mom serve food at a local homeless shelter in Toledo, Ohio. Little Hannah noticed a man at the shelter who had holes in his shoes and no socks. She asked her mom if she could give this man her own socks. Instead, Hannah and her mom went out and bought socks to give out at local shelters. Over the next two years, with help from family and friends, they collected nearly 10,000 pairs of socks to donate to shelters. Since then, Hannah's Socks has distributed over 100,000 pairs of socks for homeless and domestic violence shelters. Today, the organization kicks off the Hannah's Socks Holiday Sock Drive, to collect socks and funds for this year's upcoming winter and holiday season.

Inspired by Hannah's story, The Clorox Company became a sponsor of Hannah's Socks this season. The goal is to gather and donate 10,000 pairs of new socks to underprivileged children's programs as well as homeless and domestic violence shelters.

This is such a heart-warming story! It's also a great way to teach our kids about how a simple act of kindness can make a difference to someone in need.

If you would like to get involved, you can collect socks at home, school, work, or church for this great cause. Families can also donate funds and find out more about Hannah's Socks and the Holiday Sock Drive at www.hannahssocks.org.

Book Review - Hope Faith and Charlie

I received a complimentary copy of the book Hope Faith and Charlie from author Deirdre Carey. Deirdre wrote this book in order to share the story of her baby boy's heroic battle with cancer. When her baby, Charlie, was just about six months old, he was diagnosed with a rare form of brain and spine cancer. Their world was turned upside down. Soon, Deirdre, her husband John, and their other young son, Jay, were thrust into a world full of doctor appointments, hospital stays, medical treatments, and surgical procedures.

When Charlie was first diagnosed, doctors gave him less than a 20% chance to survive. Less than 20%! I cannot even imagine the helplessness that this family must have felt. But, Deirdre and her family just wouldn't accept that and reached out to other medical experts for more opinions. They met a doctor who immediately made an impression on them, saying that "we don't focus on statistics" instead "we treat the child, the individual, not as a number, but as a person." This was the first professional to give them a glimmer of hope since learning of Charlie's diagnosis and they knew she was the person they wanted to oversee Charlie's care.

What came next was almost two grueling years of extremely aggressive chemotherapy treatments. Through it all, Charlie proved to everyone that he was a fighter. His sheer will and strength was awe-inspiring. Deirdre became a fierce advocate for Charlie - always asking questions and demanding answers about her son's condition and treatment. In her own words, she "freaked out" over the smallest things. But, this was her baby boy. Can you blame her? Deirdre was totally devoted to her family and determined to fight for Charlie. She also remained committed to making sure that their other son, Jay, had as normal a childhood as possible. She vowed that cancer would not control their lives.

From the beginning, Charlie's family asked everyone they knew (and even those they didn't know) to pray for Charlie. They truly believed in the power of prayer and always maintained hope that Charlie could be saved. There was an outpouring of support from friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, and even strangers. So many people came through for this family in so many ways, providing not only emotional and financial support, but also help with the little things that really made a difference in their daily life (cooking meals, cleaning their house, shoveling their driveway, etc).

Today, Charlie is in remission, living the life of a normal, happy school-kid. Sadly, Deirdre's marriage came to a sudden unexpected ending shortly after Charlie's therapy was stopped. But, once again, Deirdre persevered. She is now a working single mother, taking care of her boys and in a happy loving relationship. Though it was sad and heartbreaking to read, it was also very uplifting. I am a believer in miracles and this powerful story just made my belief even stronger.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 222px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HbInqT6lN4Q/SuegiWgUKMI/AAAAAAAABU8/cFnZo2f9gJU/s320/Charlie2008002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397459190443944130" />

10% of all proceeds from the sale of Hope Faith and Charlie will be donated directly to The Floating Hospital for Children's Cancer Center at Tufts-New England Medical Center (where Charlie was treated). My friend and I took our daughters (age 13) to see the midnight premier of Twilight when it came out, starting a fun tradition for us. When we saw Twilight, they were so excited that we let them go to a midnight movie on a school night. We definitely earned some "cool mom" brownie points. This year, however, even though they are excited to go to another midnight movie premier, they have informed us they will not be sitting with us in the theater. Uh...okay.

Our 16 yr. old son has his first real job! A "nationally-known grocery store chain" is building a new store just minutes from our home. He started training this week. Yippee! I'm excited for him and anxious that he will have the opportunity to start practicing some money-management skills, as, up until now, it has usually burned holes in his pockets;o)

My daughter's class had to do an 80's project - they were put into groups and had to make up some type of performance based on a song from the 1980's (they could sing, dance, act...whatever). After everyone did their performances, my daughter was telling me a little about them. She was going on about how one boy was obsessed with Billy Joel and that his performance was "so lame." I said "Oh, I love Billy Joel, he's good." She replied, "yeah, but you're old!" Are you starting to see what it's like living with a 13 yr. old girl?

I have now surpassed 400 posts on my blog! That's quite a feat, at least I think so anyway. To celebrate, I'll be posting another round of Movie Trivia along with a giveaway. I hope to get the post up later today, so be sure and come back soon. Everyone who plays along will be entered in a giveaway for a $25 Visa Gift Card - (U.S. residents only for the giveaway)

Movie Trailer Tuesday - Charlie Bartlett

After being kicked out of so many private schools, rich kid Charlie Bartlett must now give public school a try. To fit in, he starts playing "psychiatrist" to his fellow classmates. This turns him into an instant success at school, but, doesn't exactly win over the school principal (whose daughter Charlie happens to be dating). Soon, Charlie finds himself in over his head and must figure out how to make things right. Robert Downey Jr. does an excellent job, as always, playing the principal. And, Hope Davis is a lot of fun as Charlie's quirky mom. It's a sweet, funny, feel-good movie.

General Mills Free Movie Night - GIVEAWAY WINNER

Thanks to everyone who entered! He was playing football outside with his brother and some other neighborhood boys when he was tackled by one of the bigger kids, who landed on his collarbone. He's in a clavicle brace that he has to wear for another few weeks while his injury heals.

This past weekend, our 11 yr. old son was outside playing. He was running in the field by our house and came upon an unexpected small dip in the ground, which caused him to twist his foot. He now has a broken foot and is in a full boot cast for the next 4-6 weeks. I'm glad they didn't put him in the actual plaster-type cast; this boot cast that he has can be taken off for baths and to change socks. It's much more comfortable for him than a regular cast (and less stinky, too)

Sheesh! Maybe we need to go ahead and put the orthopedic doc on retainer. I've never had any broken bones. What about you? In fact, I will be the first to admit that I can be a big ol' scaredy-cat.

*spiders, bugs, mice, snakes - any kind of creepy crawly creature scares me

*tornadoes - tornadoes are a reality in our part of the country

*choking - maybe it's irrational, but, I have a real fear of my children choking

*falling - I'm not the most graceful gal and I have a fear of tripping and falling flat on my face

*deep water - this is probably my greatest fear, I do not want to be anywhere near water that is too deep for my feet to touch the bottom

Then, there's this -- fear of not being in control. I am a bit of a control freak. No wait. I'm a 100% bonafide control freak. And, not being in control scares me. I've blogged about this recently and it's a perfect example of me feeling like I'm not in control - our oldest son is 16 and has several friends who are starting to get their driver's licenses. Of course, like any normal teen, he wants to go and hang out with his friends who are now driving. Letting him go, knowing that I'm not in control of the car he's in or the places he is going, has been a hard thing for me.

What about you? What do you fear? If you would like to blog about this, be sure and visit Stephanie to add your post to her Mister Linky.

How Many Are On Your List?

Image by Alice Harold via Flickr
I realize it's not even Halloween, but, I am already thinking about Christmas shopping. Every year, I vow to get my shopping done early - so that I can actually enjoy the weeks leading up to Christmas, instead of running around town, stressing about trying to find last-minute gifts. Of course, that never happens. For whatever reasons -- procrastination, lack of money and/or time, or just difficulty choosing gifts, I can never seem to accomplish my goal. Then, because I am still worried about shopping up until the last minute, I don't get to spend the time doing the fun things I want to do around the holidays - baking, decorating, having friends over, etc.

Once again, I am telling myself that this year will be different. I WILL get my shopping done early. I would love to be finished by December 1st, but, ssshhhh!...I'm afraid to actually say a deadline out loud - that would be too much pressure. Anyway, I sat down to write out my shopping list, keeping in mind that we are having a really bad year financially, so, I'm trying to keep my list as condensed as possible. My list includes what we consider our immediate families - one set of grandparents, our parents, siblings, several nieces and nephews, and a couple great-nieces and great-nephews. Just on our "Family" shopping list, we have 30 people to shop for! Then, there's our "Friends" shopping list - this list is made up of another 11 people - our closest friends, neighbors, and a teacher. Now, I'm at 41 people to shop for, and that does not even include my husband or kids. I have condensed my list quite a bit, crossing off several friends, a school bus driver, and teachers (3 of our kids are in middle and high school. They have 4-5 teachers each, so even if it was something really small, that would still be another 12-15 gifts).

ACK! 41 people. Does that seems like a lot?

We don't buy extravagant items, it's definitely not about spending a lot of money. But, with that many people, it adds up quickly. We already let the kids exchange names on my side of the family, so that helps. And, several of the nieces and nephews are married, so we usually buy a "couple" gift for them, like a restaurant gift card or something they can use together. Everyone knows it's been a rough year for us and I know we should try and cut back even more. I feel like I've already narrowed it down to the bare minimum.

I'm curious...how many people are on your holiday shopping list? Are you a last-minute shopper, or do you get yours done early?

Movie Trailer Tuesday - White Oleander

I first read this novel and then watched the movie several years ago.
