Update

We just got back from the eye dr. I'm afraid the news was not good. He does have a huge tear in his retina and it's starting to detach. He has to have surgery in the morning (a major procedure, as described by the physician). The doctor informed us that without the surgery, there is a 100% chance he would lose sight in that eye. That was so scary to hear. With the surgery, there is a 90% chance he will save his vision and be fine, although he may have to start wearing a contact in that eye at some point. We won't know for about six months post-op if he is totally out of the woods. This was really difficult for my son to hear. He took it really hard and as soon as we walked out of the exam room he lost it. Honestly, I wanted to burst into tears, but I was trying to keep it together and remain calm for him. The surgery is outpatient and immediately after the surgery (for 5-7 days) he has to keep his head down (forward, as if you were laying your head down on a desk) at all times (except when he eats and goes to the restroom). It's going to be a difficult time, I'm sure. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

What a horrible thing to happen to a young person. My sight is the one thing I treasure the most. I can feel his pain and anxiety. I hope that everything goes well with this all.

Good luck with the surgery. This is one of those life lessons that you wish didn't happen. I can imagine how awful the other boy feels and how traumatic this is for your son.
Keep us posted on the recovery.
