"Fall Back" - Set Your Clocks Back November 3, 2013

Do you ever have trouble sleeping?

Don't hate me, but, I am one of those very lucky people for whom sleep comes easily. I generally fall asleep within minutes of hitting the pillow and I generally stay asleep until my cell phone alarm awakens me with it's gentle melody (so much better than an annoyingly loud blaring buzz). I rarely take naps, but, if I decide to lay down for a quick rest at any point in the day, I can almost always fall right to sleep.

I love my sleep!

Like most people, I encounter my fair share of stress and worry throughout the day. Unless it's something that needs to be addressed immediately, I usually tell myself to put it aside and revisit it later when I'm winding down for the night. The thing is - and I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing - I fall asleep so quickly that I never get around to working out these daily stresses in my mind. I suppose I should be happy that my worries are not keeping me awake at night. I know many people have problems sleeping and I'm sure it has to be miserable. But, I often feel like there's a lot of unfinished business going on in my head; like I'm not resolving things that need to be resolved.

I mentioned earlier that I wake up to a cell phone alarm; it is a soft, nature-inspired melody and reminds me of a lullaby or something you would hear in a baby toy. I used to use a very loud and very irritating buzzing tone for my alarm. My thought was that the louder and more unpleasant the sound, the faster I would wake up. But, since switching to the soft musical alarm, I find that I wake up just as easily and feel a lot less grumpy about having to get out of bed. It really has made a difference in how I start my mornings.

While we're on the topic of sleep, don't forget that this weekend marks the end of daylight savings time. So, if you live in an area that observes this, remember to set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. I always welcome this time change. Not only do we gain an extra hour of sleep this weekend (my teens are thrilled!), but I enjoy the days getting dark earlier and the fact that winter is on its way. I'm definitely a cold-weather person!

What about you? Do you handle the time change well? And, are you an easy sleeper, like me, or someone who has difficulty with sleep? What kind of alarm do you wake up to?

Top DreamWorks Characters to Watch This Halloween (with DVD Bundle Giveaway)

This Giveaway is now closed

I am sharing this post as a member of the Fox Home ENT Insiders Blogging Program. They provided me with free DVDs for review. They are also providing the same DVDs for giveaway to one of my blog readers. All opinions expressed are my own.

The Top DreamWorks Characters to Watch This Halloween

Available on DVD October 15

The approach of Halloween means that the weather is getting cooler and it’s the perfect time of year for family movie nights on the couch at home. All of the scary movies being shown on TV aren’t exactly family friendly, so as a parent you may be finding it difficult to come up with things to watch with your little ones. Luckily for you, DreamWorks is releasing three fantastic films on DVD this month! Below, you can find out more about the characters to be watching in these family-friendly titles this Halloween.

Shrek the Musical
The greatest fairy tale never told comes to life as never before in DreamWorks’ Shrek The Musical, the highly acclaimed Broadway production based on the smash-hit movie. Called a “triumph of comic imagination” (Elysa Gardner, USA Today) that “never stints on spectacle or laughs” (David Rooney, Variety), Shrek The Musical received eight 2009 Tony Award® nominations including Best Musical, winning Best Costume Design of a Musical (Tim Hatley) and received a Grammy Award® nomination for Best Musical Show Album.

 Shrek
Shrek may not want to welcome visitors to his home in the swamp, but this big green ogre would make a fun guest in your home this Halloween! Although he puts up a tough front, Shrek has a soft spot in his heart for those he cares about, especially Donkey and Fiona. This goofy guy brings the laughs with his Scottish-Irish accent and one-liners! He’s also great for scaring off enemies with his stinky breath, huge size, and frightening yell.

Monsters vs. Aliens: Cloning Around
Get ready for a world of hilarious monster mischief and alien antics in this all-new animated TV series inspired by DreamWorks Animation’s ginormous hit movie Monsters vs. Aliens. Join team leader Susan, muscle-bound Link, ingenious Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D., and B.O.B., the gelatinous blob, as the residents of the government containment area embark on fun-filled adventures under the not-too-watchful eye of General Monger!

 B.O.B.
B.O.B., short for Benzoate Ostylezene Bicarbonate, got his name when he was accidentally created in a laboratory from some scientists experimenting with chemically- and genetically-altered food products. This one-eyed blue blob was held in captivity in Area Fifty-Something for decades, but he still has a friendly personality and contagious smile. Since B.O.B is a large gelatinous mass, he can change his shape easily and absorb any object. Although he has no brain, B.O.B. is quite intelligent! This big, blue blob is exactly the person you want by your side on a creepy Halloween night.

 Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.
An intellectual mad scientist, Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. is known for bursting into psychotic laughter while completing his experiments. But, don’t be fooled. Dr. Cockroach has not always been this way. In the 60’s he developed a device that would allow humans to live a lifespan similar to that of a cockroach. When his creation went wrong, Dr. Cockroach came away with the head of a bug and the ability to climb walls and digest garbage just like cockroaches. His intelligence and lifespan make him a force to be reckoned with!

Kung Fu Panda: Scorpion Sting
Get ready for more high-kicking action and fur-flying fun in this awesome animated TV series based on the Academy Award®-Nominated hit movieKung Fu Panda*! He may not be your typical warrior, but Po packs an arsenal of martial arts skills as big as his heart...and his stomach. Always ready to fight for what’s right, Po and the Furious Five—Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Crane and Viper—face exotic dangers at every turn, including a pair of magic shoes with an evil “sole,” and Scorpion, one of the sharpest villains in all the land!

 Po
The courageous dragon warrior, Po Ping, is always up for a new adventure. Although Po is not your typical Kung Fu warrior, he uses his personality and his strengths to solve problems and protect those who need him most. He has an excitement for life and is determined to be the best warrior that he can possibly be. Sometime Po can be a little immature and rambunctious, but he has a kind heart and knows the importance of family.

 Tigress
A vital member to the Furious Five, Tigress has unmatchable strength and bravery. She is a master at Kung Fu and at one point was considered to be destined for the title of Dragon Warrior. Although her short temper can still appear sometimes, Tigress has learned to be more friendly and calm. At times she is quiet and less sociable than the other members of the Furious Five. Overall, she possesses a strength and dignity  that makes others admire her.

Book Review - Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea

This book is one that I had heard some buzz about and was excited to read. After a short time on my public library's waiting list, I finally got my hands on it last week. It did not disappoint!

by April Genevieve Tucholke

Violet and Luke White are twin siblings - teenagers - living in the sleepy East Coast town of Echo. They come from old family money and live in a rambling mansion set on a cliff above the sea. Their parents are artists who live a rather bohemian lifestyle and are more concerned with their art than their parenting.

When the story begins, the teens' grandmother, Freddie, has passed away but still remains a great influence on Violet. Violet and Luke's parents have taken off to Europe in search of their latest artistic muse and inspiration. They have left the kids at home alone, for who knows how long, and the family wealth has pretty much been squandered away. Over the years, the estate has been neglected and is no longer the grand setting that it once was. Out of money and out of food, Violet comes up with a plan to rent out the guest cottage for some quick cash.

River West shows up out of nowhere, interested in renting the guest house. Violet finds herself mesmerized by him, drawn to him. He is young and handsome and relaxed but also rather mysterious. The two immediately begin to get close and spend time together. When strange events start happening in her town - a little girl gone missing, kids with stakes in the cemetery who claim to have seen the devil, a scary urban legend coming to life, and more - Violet starts to think there may be more to River than meets the eye. Is he just a cute boy who happens to be a good kisser, or could he be...the devil? And, why can't she seem to avoid touching him and just stay away from him?

I love this story! It is probably my favorite book I've read all year. So many YA stories have a paranormal aspect to them but I found this one to be different and unique. The setting - the crumbling estate, complete with it's dark and shadowy attic full of remnants from the past, it's massive but dilapidated property, and the crashing waves far below the cliff - reallly add to the story. The characters are complex and well developed and I like them all - the good and the bad. The author's writing style is beautiful and pulls you into the story completely. I do not usually get scared from a book, but Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea definitely gave me a chill. It's the perfect combination of gothic horror and romance.

A sequel to Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea is set to come out next year. I will be anxiously waiting to see how the story continues.

My Thoughts

This was my first experience reading a book about the Amish. It was so interesting to read and learn about the Amish way of life and see their way of speaking in action. I did not know that they had such strong feelings about outsiders but in this story, it was definitely apparent. But, in so many other ways, this Amish family was not that different from any other family - they loved and supported one another no matter what. A Christmas Gift for Rose deals with an English family whose love for their daughter leads them to give her up for a better chance at life. There was also the theme of war and how both Amish and English dealt with that. The story was very touching and the characters all drew me in, especially Rose. I loved the relationship between Rose and her Amish mother. And, I was rooting for Rose and her love interest, Jonathan, the entire time. This short novella is a quick and easy read with a very sweet story.

Minted - An Online Stationery Store

This is a sponsored post written on behalf of Minted.com. All opinions expressed in this post are my own and may differ from others.
minted

I was recently invited to check out Minted, the online stationery store. They focus on products with exceptional design from a global community of designers. Their products include a selection of Christmas and seasonal holiday cards as well as wedding, new baby, thank you cards, moving announcements, and more. They also have art prints, journals, and party decor. Minted.com truly has a great selection of items to meet so many of your stationery needs.

Even though it's only October, I'm already thinking ahead. Late fall is when I like to begin looking for Christmas card ideas for our family. We are a family of six and getting my teenagers together to take a family Christmas photo is always a chore, which is why I like to start early.

I browsed through the selection of Christmas and holiday cards available on Minted and found so many that I like. They have a huge variety of card shapes, styles, and themes - everything from traditional to minimalist to modern designs. I really appreciate that there are cards for single photos or for multiple photos. Another nice feature is that many of the cards offer more than one color choice for that design. Here are a few of my favorites:

Holiday Scrolls - this has such a fun shape

Breaking the Grid - love the use of multiple photos

Holly Jolly Wishes - this foil pressed card is pretty and shimmery

Minted Christmas cards are customizable using your favorite photos and personalized greeting. You can choose from your choice of thick Signature paper, 100% recycled Premium paper, or Pearlescent paper. They will also print your recipient addresses on your envelopes - a terrific time-saver.

Right now, they are offering a Sneak Peek Sale where you can enjoy 20% off all holiday cards. Use code PREVIEW2013 to take advantage of this limited time offer (expires Oct. 7).

Another product carried by Minted that is of special interest to me is their Graduation announcements and invitations. My daughter will be graduating from high school in the spring so I will definitely be shopping for cards for this occasion. They have a lot of really cool options, especially if you are looking for more of a non-traditional graduation announcement.

With so many beautiful choices, I can't wait to get started shopping and customize some cards for my own family. Check out Minted and let me know which design you like best.
