Aloha Friday - Emergency Preparedness

It's Aloha Friday...where I post a quick and easy question for you to answer.

Spring is here. In our neck of the woods, that means it's the time of year when we can experience a lot of storms. Whenever there's a severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning, we grab our flashlights and blankets, and head to the basement. I really need to have some kind of emergency supply kit, but, I have never got around to putting that together for us. I've always said this is something I need to do, but, then never seem to actually follow through and do it. My question is:

Do you have any kind of emergency supply kit put together in your house?

Do you feel like you would be prepared for some type of natural disaster or other such emergency?

I'm afraid to say, that we would probably not be ready for any major disaster. Here's a very useful website that offers all kinds of helpful information regarding emergency preparedness. Some of the topics this site covers include: help with family emergency plans, supply kit checklists, online planning tools, tips for pet owners and older Americans, and more. Check it out.

I'm like you, we don't have an emergency kit. I guess we always assume that if something terrible would happen we could get back upstairs to get what we needed. I don't even know if we have a flashlight with batteries that work. That's sad. I do think every house should have an emergency kit.

Hello, It's great that you are educating people about emergency kits and other preparedness steps. Please also consider encouraging your readers to prepare their homes before a disaster, so they will have a home to come back to once the emergency passes. We are not prepared. We have some things stocked up but not enough.. I tell my husband all the time that we need to have more water and can goods on hand.. Thanks for the reminder. The things are these days.. I think its probably a pretty good idea to be ready.

Not as prepared as I'd like but a little prepared. I have an awesome first aid kit but need to work on a 72 hr kit. I keep thinking I will but I really just need to buy one; @ least that way it would be done!

No, we do not have anything like that set up and I know we should think about things at least a little. We have items that we would need, just not in a single spot ready for quick grabbing.

Oh Lord...no. We don't have an emergency supply kit but now I feel like I should have one. I remember putting one together right after 9/11 and they were scaring us every single day. But I don't know what happened to it. I think I had a radio, water, garbage bags, duct tape and some other stuff. But not much happens here in NJ in terms of natural disasters (knock on wood) so I guess I'll keep risking it.

Naw, no kit and I know we should have one in the home but we do have them in the vehicles. Guess I figure if something is going to happen it will be more like to happen out on the road since we travel for work a lot.

We do not have an emergency kit and we definitely are not prepared for any sort of natural disaster. We don't live in an area where we get tornados or hurricanes. There is often times flooding, but not so close to our house that we'd be in trouble. The only thing I can think of that could possibly hurt us or our house would be lightning striking our house or an earthquake...but the last earthquake we had that did any sort of damage was in 2000 or 2001. So while we should probably be prepared for *something*, we aren't.
