Did you know that today is National Pie Day? I happened to hear about it on the morning news, so, I thought I would do a little research and find out about the history of pies. Here's a few things I learned:
*Pies have been around since as far back as the ancient Egyptians, early Romans and Greeks.
*Most of the earliest pies were made of meat. It's thought that fruit pies didn't come around until the 1500's. According to the American Pie Council, "The crust of the pie was referred to as "coffyn". There was actually more crust than filling. Often these pies were made using fowl and the legs were left to hang over the side of the dish and used as handles."
*Pie came to America along with the first English settlers. It went on to evolve into one of our favorite desserts. Another interesting tidbit from the American Pie Council -- "Pies became a common part of American life. A Vermont housewife, itemizing her baking for the year 1877, counted 152 cakes, 421 pies and 2,140 doughnuts."
How can you celebrate National Pie Day? Bake your favorite pie and share with your family after dinner tonight. Or, indulge and keep it all for yourself. Or, surprise a friend or neighbor by dropping off a fresh-baked pie (from your own kitchen or your local bakery). Happy National Pie Day!
This brings me to my Aloha Friday question:
What is your favorite kind of pie?
It's hard for me to choose just one. My favorites are coconut cream, cherry, and chess pie. What about you?

My favorite pie is a pineapple custard pie. It was my Mom's dad's favorite pie and she hasn't made it for years (since he passed away.) Maybe I'll celebrate by finding the recipe and making it for her. :)
I'm not ahuge pie fan because I don't like crust. I do like to eat the insides out of any kind of creamy pie (peanut butter, chocolate, coconut)...
Love strawberry pie with lots of whipped cream in the summer. My all time favorite is probably peach or pumpkin depending on my mood.
Cherry is my favorite pie.
I love it with whipped cream.
I am not a pie person well unless of course its a pizza pie
I actually did know that it is Pie day today. Most favorite would have to be key lime, followed by blueberry. My husbands favorite is pecan...can't have a Thanksgiving dinner without it. Country living magazine did an article about a family that celebrates a pie night right before Thanksgiving. It was a very cool idea. Coming from a bakery background, and boxing way too many pies in my youth, I like to see them in slice form on my dessert plate (lol).

I think that today should be a national holiday. I love Apple and cherry pie. I made an apple pie on Tuesday in honor of our new prez and the snow that was on the ground. I didn't eat it though. But it smelled great.
I love chocolate silk pie and strawberry pie. Yummy!!!

Oooh coconut cream is GOOD! I also like chocolate cream pie!
I've never been a big fan of pie unless it has graham cracker crust...so that would be chocolate cream pie.
Good question! My favorite pie is the pecan pie my mom used to make...she was from Mississippi and knew how to make it just right...I sure miss it.
Please check out my Aloha Friday question if you haven't done so already - thanks!
